Stroke rehabilitation at home in Lahat

Turning close neighbours into trained helpers, and chores into recovery goals.

How do we organise helpers in a close community?

In a small suburb, offers of help arrive quickly. That is good, as long as the help is safe and not duplicated by a crowd.

Our stroke rehabilitation at home page explains the method. Below is how to set up helpers in a place like Lahat.

What rules keep visitors safe?

Share these rules with neighbours and relatives before they visit.

  • Do not pull on the weak arm. Support it from underneath, or let it rest on a pillow.
  • Do not help him stand or walk unless you have been shown how.
  • Sit on his weak side when talking, so he practises turning towards it.
  • Let him do tasks himself, even if it takes longer.
  • Tell the family if he seems tired, dizzy or unwell.

Put the rules on a card by the door. It saves the family from explaining each time.

Who gets trained?

Choose two or three people who will be there the most: a spouse, a child, a neighbour or a helper. They attend the first visit.

  1. We show them how to help him sit up and stand safely.
  2. They practise while we stand beside them.
  3. They repeat the card’s exercises at the agreed times.

Others can visit and keep him company. Our stroke family guide for Ipoh covers how to share the load without confusion.

What goals come from his own routine?

Ask what he did every day before the stroke. In Lahat it may be the morning at the front gate, a walk to the shop, sweeping the yard or visiting the mosque.

We choose one, break it into small steps and practise those. A goal that is his own keeps him going, and the family has something to celebrate.

What if I am not sure the hospital has arranged therapy?

Ask the ward or the doctor about follow-up. Send us the discharge summary meanwhile. Home physiotherapy can begin alongside whatever the hospital arranges, and it saves the survivor tiring journeys.

If he is discharged from Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun or a private hospital such as KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital, ask which clinic will see him. Our guide to going home after the stroke ward lists the questions to ask.

Questions people ask

Neighbours want to help my father walk. Is that a good idea?

Only after they have been shown how. Pulling on the weak arm or walking too fast can cause a fall. We teach one or two neighbours the safe grip and pace, and everyone else offers company instead.

My mother wants to sit at the front gate in the morning like she used to. Can we plan for that?

Yes, and it is a good goal. We practise sitting down and standing up from a chair, the walk to the gate and the step if there is one. The routine matters for her mood as well as her body.

He was discharged but we have not heard from the hospital about therapy. What now?

Ask the ward or the doctor what follow-up is planned. Meanwhile, send us the discharge summary, and we can begin home physiotherapy alongside the hospital's plan.

Relatives want to cook special food to help him recover. Should we change his diet?

Ask his doctor or a dietitian before you change what he eats, especially with diabetes, blood pressure or swallowing problems. We focus on movement and will tell you if we notice a swallowing difficulty.

Every body is different. For a diagnosis that fits you, see a registered physiotherapist or doctor, and seek urgent care for sudden weakness, numbness, chest pain or severe pain after a fall.
