First visit

What happens at your first visit

You are listened to first, then shown what to do, at home or in our centre.

What happens before the visit?

It starts with a WhatsApp message from you. Tell us who needs physio, what happened and which part of Ipoh they live in. We reply with a few questions, how the visit would run and a quote.

When you are happy to go ahead, we agree on a day. If the patient has papers from a doctor or hospital, send a photo of them now so the physiotherapist can read them first.

What happens during a home visit?

The physiotherapist arrives, introduces themselves and asks to sit down with you. They listen to the story first, and you do most of the talking.

  1. They ask about pain, medicines, past injuries, how your days go and what you want to do again.
  2. They look at the home: the entrance, the stairs, the bathroom and the bed.
  3. They check how you stand, walk, sit down, get up and climb. They test strength, movement and balance.
  4. They start treatment in the same session, with hands-on work, guided movement or both.
  5. They teach a short set of exercises and agree on goals with you and your family.

The physiotherapist decides on the day whether home is the right place for your goal. If you need a doctor or a scan first, we say so plainly.

How do I prepare?

A few small things make the first visit easier. None of them needs special equipment.

  • Clear a path from the front door to the room where we will work.
  • Put out a firm chair without wheels, and a bed or mat if floor work is likely.
  • Gather discharge papers, scan reports and the medicine list.
  • Wear loose clothes and flat, closed shoes.
  • Ask a family member or helper to be at home.

Our first visit checklist puts this on one page, and the blog explains preparing your home for a physio visit.

What do I leave with?

You leave with a plan you understand. That means a short set of exercises, an idea of the visits each week that suit you, and goals that are written in everyday terms, such as “walk to the corner shop”.

Families can ask for a message summary after each visit, so everyone sees the same plan. The plan changes as you improve.

Can I arrange it for my parent from outside Ipoh?

Yes. You do not need to be in Ipoh for the first message or the plan. Send the diagnosis, the hospital, and who is at home during the day.

We agree a start date that suits your parent and keep you updated by message. Our guide on caring for parents in Ipoh from KL covers what families ask most.

What if our Canning Garden centre suits me better?

Our Canning Garden centre, near Fatimah Hospital, is opening soon, and there is no date yet. Home visits are available now. When the centre opens, you can ask whether a visit there suits your goal better.

Questions families ask

Here are the questions people raise before a first visit. If yours is missing, send it on WhatsApp.

Questions people ask

How long is the first visit?

We have not fixed a standard length to promise, because it depends on the patient and the problem. A first visit includes time to listen, assess and start treatment. Ask us on WhatsApp what to expect for your situation, and we will tell you before you book.

What should the patient wear?

Loose, comfortable clothes that let the physiotherapist see the area that hurts, and flat, closed shoes that grip. For a knee or hip problem, shorts or loose trousers that roll up are easy to work with. Wear what feels normal for you at home.

Should a family member be there?

It helps a great deal, especially for older adults or after a stroke or surgery. A family member or helper can hear the plan, learn the exercises and remember the questions. If you cannot be there, ask us to send a message summary afterwards.

What if I feel nervous about the visit?

That is common, and we start by listening, not by testing you. Tell the physiotherapist what worries you, such as pain or fear of falling. You can say stop at any time, and we adjust the plan to what feels safe.

Do I pay at the first visit?

We send a quote on WhatsApp before you decide, so you know the plan and the price in advance. How and when payment happens will be confirmed in that conversation. Prices for home visits and for the centre are different.
