Stroke recovery at home in Fair Park

Your father is back from the stroke ward, and the next step has to happen at home.

What does the day of discharge need in Fair Park?

Some stroke survivors from this area leave a ward in the same part of town where they live. The arrival is the hard part: the lift or stairs, the first sit on their own chair, the first night.

Before the day, message us the date and the type of home. The full approach is on our stroke rehabilitation at home page. Our guide on questions to ask before discharge lists what to ask the ward.

What should be ready on the first evening?

Place a firm chair with arms where he sits most, and clear the path from the bed to the bathroom. Add a night light, and keep a plastic stool in the shower if the doctor agrees.

Keep the discharge letter, the medicine list and the ward exercise sheet on one table. On the first evening, do only what the ward taught, and let him rest.

How does home physio work alongside hospital therapy?

Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun and KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital are both familiar names in Fair Park, so some patients keep outpatient therapy there. Hospital sessions are short, and the days in between are long.

We follow the instructions of the hospital therapist and the doctor, and fill the gap with daily practice at home. Tell us on WhatsApp what the ward taught. Our guide on waiting for a hospital physio appointment explains how to use the wait.

What if we live in a flat?

A lift makes life easier, but it also brings its own steps: the gap into the lift, the corridor floor, a heavy door. We practise these on the first visit, and plan rest points between the lift and the door.

In an older terrace or a shophouse, the same checks apply to the stairs and the front step. Our stroke family guide for Ipoh covers the wider setup.

What if the family works shifts?

Hospital rotas and shop hours mean the household is rarely all at home. Send us the shift pattern on WhatsApp, and we suggest visit times when a relative or helper can learn the routine.

Choose one person to receive the short message we can send after each visit, and share it with the others.

What outings can he build towards?

On hot or wet days, indoor walking at Ipoh Parade gives sheltered, flat floor with benches to rest. We add it only when the physiotherapist agrees he is ready, and a family member goes with him the first times.

Routine checks, such as blood pressure, can go to Klinik Kesihatan Greentown or his own doctor. If new weakness, a fall or slurred speech appears, go to an emergency department at once. See stroke warning signs.

Home visits now, centre later

After a stroke, home visits in Fair Park can begin now, in the surroundings where your family member will practise every day. The Canning Garden centre, near Fatimah Hospital, is opening soon with no date yet. Prices for home and centre differ, so tell us about the stroke on WhatsApp and we quote.

Nearby, read about stroke recovery at home in Greentown, and see the Fair Park area page.

Questions people ask

He leaves the ward tomorrow. What should we have ready tonight?

A firm chair with arms, a clear path from bed to bathroom, a night light and the discharge letter with the medicine list. Message us the date, and we tell you what else to prepare. We can also arrange the first visit in the first days.

He will also have outpatient therapy at the hospital. Do we still need home physio?

They work together. Hospital appointments are short, and the first weeks at home need practice every day. Home physiotherapy fills the gaps, and we follow the hospital therapist's instructions. Tell us what he was taught on the ward.

We live in a flat with a lift. What matters there?

The lift lobby, the corridor floor and the distance to the toilet. We practise getting in and out of the lift, and plan rest points for the walk from the lift to the door. Check with your building about any waiting time at busy hours.

My mother is at Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun. Can we plan home physio before she leaves?

Yes. Message us the likely discharge date and what the ward therapist has told you. We prepare the home checklist and book the first visit for the days after she comes home.

Every body is different. For a diagnosis that fits you, see a registered physiotherapist or doctor, and seek urgent care for sudden weakness, numbness, chest pain or severe pain after a fall.
