How does a home visit work for a multilingual family?
The physiotherapist comes to your home, watches how you move and starts treatment in the same visit. Our pages and messages are in English, Malay and Chinese, and the spoken languages of our physiotherapists are being confirmed.
Tell us on WhatsApp which language the patient is most comfortable in. We will say how we can support them, and a family member who shares their language can help at the first visit. Our home physiotherapy service page describes the routine.
How do I explain exercises across languages?
Movement is easier to learn by doing than by words. We show each exercise, do it together and leave a card with pictures and the times to repeat.
- Pick one family member to be the main helper.
- Have that person attend the first visit and repeat the exercises back to us.
- Put the card where the patient and the helper can both see it.
If the patient prefers a different language from the helper, tell us. We will adapt the card.
How do festivals and family events become goals?
Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Deepavali, Christmas and family weddings all ask the body to sit, stand, walk and visit for longer than a normal day. A goal tied to an event gives practice a purpose.
We work backwards from the date.
- Sitting at a table and standing up with ease.
- Walking short distances without tiring.
- Getting in and out of the car.
- A practice visit to a neighbour or relative, with rest planned in.
Tell us the date and what the event involves. Your doctor’s advice comes first.
Can temple or mosque visits be a goal?
Yes. Sam Poh Tong and Masjid Sultan Yussuf are well-known places in the area. A visit to a place of worship is a meaningful aim for the patient and family.
We plan the walk, the steps and the sitting or standing involved, and agree a pace. A helper goes with the patient. For prayer positions, the patient and doctor decide, and we practise the movements that make it possible.
How do check-ups at Klinik Kesihatan Gunung Rapat fit in?
Send us any advice from the clinic on medicine, blood pressure or limits on effort. We keep exercises within it. We avoid booking a visit on the morning of an appointment.
If the patient feels dizzy, breathless or unwell during an exercise, stop and tell the clinic or doctor.
