Stroke rehabilitation at home in Gunung Rapat

Getting a parent back to the family table, the temple or the mosque after a stroke.

What goals suit a stroke survivor in Gunung Rapat?

The goals that last are the ones the survivor cares about. In a mixed community, these tend to be sitting at the family table, joining a festival and visiting a place of worship.

Our stroke rehabilitation at home page explains the method. Below is how to use it in a Gunung Rapat household.

How do we prepare for a festival table?

A feast asks a lot of the body: sitting for hours, reaching, passing dishes, standing and greeting. Practise these in steps before the day.

  • Sitting at a table for longer, with a rest.
  • Reaching for a dish with the weak hand supported.
  • Standing up from a chair without pulling on the table.
  • Greeting visitors from a chair when standing is too tiring.

Tell us the festival and the date. We work backwards, and your doctor’s advice comes first.

What about food, drink and swallowing?

Feasts bring rich, hard or sticky food. After a stroke, some people have trouble swallowing, which needs a speech therapist or a doctor, not a physiotherapist.

If he coughs or chokes when he eats or drinks, tell his doctor soon. Our guide to speech and swallowing referral explains who to ask. Until then, follow the doctor’s advice about what to serve.

How do we give one clear plan across languages?

When the survivor, the helper and the visiting relatives speak different languages, a written card with pictures is the common ground.

  1. We demonstrate each exercise and transfer.
  2. The helper repeats it in front of us.
  3. We leave a card with pictures and the times.
  4. The family keeps a copy where everyone can see it.

Tell us the survivor’s language on WhatsApp so we can say how we can support them. Our stroke family guide for Ipoh has more on sharing the work.

How do we plan visits to a place of worship?

Sam Poh Tong and Masjid Sultan Yussuf are among the places families here know. A visit is a good long-term aim if it matters to the survivor.

We plan the car transfer, the walk, the steps at the entrance and the sitting or standing involved. A helper goes along. The survivor and the doctor decide on prayer positions, and we practise the movements that make them possible.

Questions Gunung Rapat stroke families ask

If yours is not here, send it on WhatsApp with the date of the stroke and we will answer it directly.

Questions people ask

The whole family gathers for Deepavali, Hari Raya or Chinese New Year. How do we prepare my father?

Work back from the date. First practise sitting at the table and standing up, then getting in and out of the car, then a short practice visit to a relative. Plan rests, a firm chair with arms and a quiet room if he gets tired.

He coughs when he drinks. Should we be worried?

Tell his doctor soon, because swallowing problems after a stroke need a speech therapist. Until then follow the doctor's advice on food and drink, and do not force fluids. We tell you if we notice anything during a visit.

My mother only speaks Tamil. Can she follow the plan?

Tell us her language on WhatsApp, and we will say how we can support her. Use a family member to help at the first visit, and keep the picture card where she can see it. Doing the movement together works well in any language.

What if the family disagrees on how much he should do?

Hold a short chat at the first visit, with everyone who helps. We explain the plan, what to let him do himself and what needs a helper, so there is one set of rules. We can write the rules on the card.

Every body is different. For a diagnosis that fits you, see a registered physiotherapist or doctor, and seek urgent care for sudden weakness, numbness, chest pain or severe pain after a fall.
