Stroke recovery at home in Ipoh Garden East

Getting a stroke survivor home to a flat or a house starts with the route from the car.

What does stroke rehabilitation at home involve in Ipoh Garden East?

It starts with the way in. For a stroke survivor, a lift that stops at the wrong floor or a front door that is too narrow for a wheelchair is a real obstacle. It needs solving before discharge.

The Ipoh Garden East area page describes the neighbourhood, and the stroke rehabilitation at home page explains the service. Here is how the two meet.

What should the family check before discharge day?

Walk the route yourself, from the car or ambulance to the bed, and note each problem.

  • Does the lift reach the floor, and is it big enough for a wheelchair?
  • Is the front door wide enough, and is there a step at the threshold?
  • Is the path to the bed and toilet clear of rugs and shoes?
  • Is there a chair that can stay beside the bed for practice?

Send photos to us. The physiotherapist advises on what to move before the patient arrives.

What does the first visit cover?

We watch how the person gets from lying to sitting, sitting to standing and standing to taking a few steps. We check the weak arm and leg, and how the family supports them.

The physiotherapist teaches one or two safe transfers and a short set of exercises. In a block, we also look at the corridor, because it becomes the first walking track.

How do corridors and landings help recovery?

A corridor is a straight, sheltered track. A person who cannot yet go outside can walk along it with a helper, rest on a chair and turn around. A landing with a rail can be used to practise stepping up.

We agree distances with you, and increase them slowly. Stay beside the weak side and let the patient do the work.

What about rain and flooded roads?

The roads in this neighbourhood have flooded in heavy rain. A wet entrance is also a slipping risk for a weak leg. If it rains hard, message us and we move the visit.

Keep a ten-minute set ready for such days. The same set can be done sitting, with the family counting.

Which hospital papers do I send?

Hospital Fatimah and Pantai Hospital Ipoh are in the next neighbourhood, Ipoh Garden, and families here may hold papers from either. Others come from KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital or Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun. Send the discharge summary, the medicine list and any exercise sheet from the ward.

Questions people ask

My father had a stroke and we live on an upper floor with a lift. What should we check before discharge?

Check that the lift is working, that a wheelchair fits through the lift and the front door, and that the route to the bed and toilet is clear. Send us a photo of the entrance and the bathroom door, and the physiotherapist advises before he comes home.

There is no lift in our block. How does a stroke survivor get home?

Tell the ward team and your doctor early, because they plan the transfer. Tell us the number of flights as well. The physiotherapist can show the family how to help on stairs, and stair practice with support becomes a goal once your doctor agrees.

Rain flooded the road near Jalan Perajurit. Can we skip a week of exercises?

Please do not stop. A short set at the bedside or from a chair keeps muscles working, and it takes ten minutes. Message us if a visit is moved, and we adjust the plan on the next visit.

I live abroad and my brother stays with Dad in Ipoh Garden East. How do we keep to one plan?

Ask for a short written summary after each visit and share it between you. Your brother learns the transfers with the physiotherapist, and you check the exercise on video calls. One plan, two people helping.

Every body is different. For a diagnosis that fits you, see a registered physiotherapist or doctor, and seek urgent care for sudden weakness, numbness, chest pain or severe pain after a fall.
