Stroke rehabilitation at home in Ipoh Garden

Keeping the ward's gains going once your parent walks through the front door.

How do we carry on from the hospital?

Rehabilitation works best without a gap. The ward’s therapist may have started standing, walking or arm exercises, and the home physiotherapist continues from that point.

Our stroke rehabilitation at home page explains the method. Here we cover the handover for a family in Ipoh Garden.

What should I bring to the first visit?

Bring anything that tells us what has been done so far.

  • The discharge summary and the medicine list.
  • Any therapy notes or exercise sheets from the ward.
  • The names of the doctor and the hospital for follow-up.
  • Any aids already issued, such as a stick, a frame or a wheelchair.

If the papers are not ready, tell us what you remember and we will start from there.

What do we check in an established Ipoh Garden house?

Older houses in a settled neighbourhood can have a high front step, a raised porch and a bathroom that was not built for a weak leg. We look at four places.

  • The front step and the porch: height, surface and rail.
  • The bedroom: bed height and the path to the toilet.
  • The bathroom floor: wet and slippery tiles, and the threshold.
  • The living area: a firm chair with arms where the survivor can rest.

We then teach the helper the safest order of steps and hand positions. A family member who sees it done is more confident doing it alone.

What does the family do between visits?

Short practice, repeated across the week, builds recovery. The family’s role is to encourage the survivor to use the weak side and to avoid doing everything for him.

  • Repeat the card’s exercises at the agreed times.
  • Walk with him on the path we set.
  • Report new pain, dizziness or a fall.

Our guide to going home after the stroke ward helps you prepare the house before he arrives.

Which goals lead to the park and the mall?

The first goals are inside: the toilet, the kitchen, the front door. Then the garden path, a car transfer, and a slow walk on level ground.

The neighbourhood park, Taman Rekreasi Sultan Abdul Aziz, and Aeon Kinta City are the landmarks families here know. A short supervised visit to either can be a later goal. Your doctor and the survivor decide when.

What if it is difficult to leave the house for hospital follow-ups?

Keep your appointments with the doctor and the hospital team. Home physiotherapy covers the weekly work, so you travel less for therapy.

If a hospital therapist advises more, tell us. We work alongside, not instead of, the hospital team.

Questions people ask

The hospital therapist gave my mother some exercises. Should we stop them when you start?

Do not stop them. Show us the exercises and any notes, and we build on them. If something has to change, we explain why and update the card, so she has one clear set of instructions.

My father was in Pantai Hospital Ipoh and his therapy ended on discharge. Will you pick up from there?

Yes. Send the discharge summary and any therapy note, and tell us what he could do at discharge. We start where he is now, not from the beginning.

We live in an older terrace house with a steep front step. Can he practise that?

Yes, and we should. We practise the step with him in the first sessions, show the helper where to stand and teach the safest foot order for his weak side. A rail or a second low step can be added if needed.

He is keen to walk in the park again. How do we get there safely?

Start with indoor walking, then the front path, then a short level walk with someone beside him. A park loop in Taman Rekreasi Sultan Abdul Aziz comes later, and his doctor's advice comes first at each step.

Every body is different. For a diagnosis that fits you, see a registered physiotherapist or doctor, and seek urgent care for sudden weakness, numbness, chest pain or severe pain after a fall.
