Stroke recovery at home in Jelapang

When the family lives in three towns, one clear plan for the stroke survivor keeps everyone working together.

What does stroke recovery at home look like in Jelapang?

It looks like a handover. One or two people care for the survivor day to day, and the other children arrive from elsewhere at the weekend. Each group sees a different picture of progress.

For the service itself, read stroke rehabilitation at home. For the neighbourhood, see the Jelapang area page.

Who is the daily carer, and what do they learn first?

The person who is there every day learns first. Usually it is a spouse, a helper or a child living at home. The physiotherapist teaches the safe transfer from bed to chair, how to support the weak side and the short daily exercise set.

Learning in your own house, with your own bed and chair, is easier than learning from a leaflet.

How do visiting children fit in?

A weekend visit is a chance to learn from the physiotherapist and see changes the daily carer may have stopped noticing. Come to the visit, try the movements yourself and ask your questions.

  • Watch the transfer and then do it under guidance.
  • Look at the weak hand and the walking pattern.
  • Ask what has improved and what is still hard.
  • Note what to remind your parent about on the phone.

What is a weekly handover sheet?

It is a half-page the daily carer fills in and the visiting children read. It lists the exercises done, how far the survivor walked, any pain, mood and anything that worried them.

We help you draw one up at the first visit. A shared sheet means you speak about the same facts. It also shows progress that is easy to miss day to day.

What outings can be goals?

Start at the gate and the road outside, then a short drive and a flat walk where seats are available. A supermarket in the neighbouring township is a sheltered, flat setting, and a trolley may help, but ask the physiotherapist first.

Go at a cooler, quieter hour. Pick one outing a week and keep it short.

Which hospital papers do I send?

Families in Jelapang come home from Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun, KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital, Hospital Fatimah or Pantai Hospital Ipoh. Send the discharge summary, the medicine list and any exercise sheet from the ward.

Questions people ask

Dad lives with Mum in Jelapang, and the children visit on weekends. Who should learn the exercises?

Everyone who helps, starting with the person who is with him daily. The physiotherapist teaches Mum first, since she is there every day, then shows the children on a weekend visit so they repeat the same movements.

I am away for weeks at a time. How do I know Mum is safe with the helper?

Ask us for a short summary after each visit and a clear daily routine written down. A video call lets you watch one transfer or one exercise. If something looks unsafe, tell us and we adjust the plan.

We hired a helper recently. Can you teach her?

Yes. The physiotherapist shows a helper how to support the weak side, help with transfers and repeat the daily exercises. Training works best when a family member is in the room to ask the first questions.

Mum has weakness on one side and a long drive to hospital appointments. Can some follow-up be at home?

Home physiotherapy is one part of the plan, and hospital appointments still matter. Tell us the dates and we plan around them. Ask your doctor which follow-up needs to stay at the hospital.

Every body is different. For a diagnosis that fits you, see a registered physiotherapist or doctor, and seek urgent care for sudden weakness, numbness, chest pain or severe pain after a fall.
