Stroke recovery at home in Kampung Simee

Your mother is leaving the ward, and the doorways at home in Simee now matter.

What matters first in an older Kampung Simee house?

Older houses were not built for walking frames or wheelchairs. A doorway that fitted a healthy person can be too narrow, a bathroom threshold can be high, and the floor between rooms can have a small step.

We check these on the first visit, and the physiotherapist teaches a safe way over each one. Our main page on stroke rehabilitation at home explains the full approach.

What should we measure and prepare before discharge?

Measure the width of the front door, the bedroom door and the bathroom door, and send us the numbers with a photo. Clear a path from the bed to the bathroom, and place a firm chair with arms where she will sit.

Keep the discharge letter, the medicine list and the ward exercise sheet together. Our guide on going home after the stroke ward lists the questions to ask the ward before you leave.

How does follow-up work with Fatimah Hospital and the clinic?

Patients from Kampung Simee are discharged from Fatimah Hospital, Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun, KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital or Pantai Hospital Ipoh. The hospital doctor leads follow-up, and the nearby Klinik Kesihatan Simee may take over routine checks such as blood pressure.

We continue the movement work at home, and plan our visits around those dates. Fatimah Hospital and our centre are neighbours but separate; your doctor decides on medical care.

What does the family do between visits?

The family repeats a short routine each day: safe transfers, a few standing exercises, and support for the weak arm. The physiotherapist shows the exact way, and the person who helps most learns it first.

Choose one relative to receive our short summary after each visit and share it with the others. The stroke family guide for Ipoh explains how to divide the tasks.

Which local goals can she build towards?

The Simee wet market is a good one: standing at a stall, carrying a light bag, and walking over a wet, uneven floor. We practise each part at home, and the first trips happen with a family member beside her.

On wet days, the indoor walkways of Aeon Kinta City give sheltered practice with benches to rest. We only add these when the physiotherapist agrees she is ready.

When should we seek emergency care?

Go to an emergency department at once for a new droop in the face, new weakness in an arm or leg, slurred speech or sudden confusion. These can be signs of another stroke.

See stroke warning signs. A fall with injury, chest pain or choking at meals also needs a doctor promptly.

Home now, our centre later

Home visits are available now. Our Canning Garden centre is opening soon, near Fatimah Hospital, and Kampung Simee lies beside Canning Garden. Prices for home and centre differ, and we quote on WhatsApp.

Questions people ask

Will a wheelchair or walking frame fit through our doors?

Measure the width of the main doorways before discharge, and send us the numbers on WhatsApp together with a photo. Older houses can have narrow bathroom doors. The physiotherapist checks on the first visit and suggests the right aid, or a simple change such as taking a door off its hinges.

She came home from Fatimah Hospital. When do we start physio at home?

As soon as your doctor says she is stable and she is settled at home. Message us the discharge summary and the date. We then plan a first visit and tell you what to prepare, from the chair height to the path to the bathroom.

Who monitors her blood pressure and diabetes?

Your doctor and clinic, for example Klinik Kesihatan Simee, lead the medical follow-up. We focus on movement and tell you when something should go back to the doctor. We also plan visits around her check dates.

When your centre opens, can she continue there?

Possibly. Our Canning Garden centre is opening soon, with no date. When she can travel safely, you and the physiotherapist decide if some sessions move there, for example for walking practice with equipment. The plan carries over.

Every body is different. For a diagnosis that fits you, see a registered physiotherapist or doctor, and seek urgent care for sudden weakness, numbness, chest pain or severe pain after a fall.
