Stroke recovery at home in Canning Garden

The ward had rails and helpers, and the porch step at home is the first thing to practise.

What is stroke recovery at home like in Canning Garden?

It starts at the front door, with the step from car to porch. In a single-storey house the rest of the route is flat, so the work is small and specific: the porch lip, the bathroom threshold, the height of the bed.

For the full picture of the service, see stroke rehabilitation at home. This page is about doing it in this estate; the Canning Garden area page covers the neighbourhood.

How do we handle the day the patient comes home?

Plan the arrival before the discharge. Decide who stands on the weak side, where the chair waits at the top of the step and which route leads straight to the bed.

Message us the discharge date and a photo of the entrance. The physiotherapist can advise on that arrival and visit soon after, once your doctor says it is safe.

What does the first visit check in a single-storey house?

We follow the daily route, in this order.

  • Bed to sitting, and sitting to standing.
  • The walk or wheelchair route to the toilet, and the bathroom threshold.
  • The kitchen and the chair at the table.
  • The porch and gate step, with a helper beside the patient.

Each step shows where the family needs to help and where the patient can already do more.

Let the patient do what they can, with support. That practice builds recovery.

Which hospital papers should I bring out?

Canning Garden sits beside Ipoh Garden, so families may hold papers from Hospital Fatimah or Pantai Hospital Ipoh. Others come from KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital or Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun. Any of them helps: the discharge summary, the medicine list, and any exercise sheet from the ward physiotherapist.

Speech and swallowing problems go to a speech therapist or your doctor. We tell you if we notice a concern.

How can a family that runs a business share the care?

Some homes here also hold a small eatery or shop. Write a simple roster for the day, and let each adult learn the same transfers. The patient hears one set of instructions, not three.

Short, regular practice beats one long session. Stroke recovery rewards the five-minute routine at every meal.

What walking goals suit these streets?

The streets of the estate are quiet, with mature trees. A good first goal is the gate. The next is the pavement, then the end of the road and back with a helper. Wait for the physiotherapist to approve each outing.

Questions people ask

My father is coming home to a house with a raised porch. Should we build a ramp first?

Do not rush into building. Send us a photo of the porch and the step height, and the physiotherapist advises on arrival day whether practice with a helper is enough or a temporary ramp or rail would help. Spend money only after that advice.

We run a small eatery on Jalan Canning Estate. Who watches Mum while we work?

Write down who is home in each part of the day, then tell us. We teach every adult in the roster the same two transfers, so Mum is helped the same way at breakfast as at supper. A short written summary after each visit keeps everyone aligned.

When the Canning Garden centre opens, should my mother move there?

Only when travelling is comfortable and the physiotherapist agrees. Equipment sessions can help once walking is safer. Until then, practice at home matters more, because that is where she moves every day.

She was discharged from Fatimah, and the ward physio said to continue. Do you take over?

Yes. Send a photo of the discharge summary and any exercise sheet, and we continue from where the ward stopped. We check each exercise with her first, so nothing is repeated from memory.

Every body is different. For a diagnosis that fits you, see a registered physiotherapist or doctor, and seek urgent care for sudden weakness, numbness, chest pain or severe pain after a fall.
