Stroke rehabilitation at home in Klebang

A stroke recovery plan that two households in different parts of Ipoh can both follow.

What does a first month of stroke recovery look like at home?

Week one is about safety: getting in and out of bed, reaching the toilet and sitting steadily. From week two, the plan adds standing and short walks, depending on the person and the doctor’s advice.

Our stroke rehabilitation at home page explains the method. Our guide to the first three months of stroke recovery shows what usually changes over time.

What is a good daily rhythm in a hot house?

Short practice, repeated, works better than one long push. In Klebang’s heat, morning and early evening are easier than the afternoon.

  • Two or three practice slots a day, each short and written on a card.
  • Water beside the survivor, and a fan or cool room.
  • A rest after each slot, with the weak arm supported on a pillow.
  • A note of anything new, such as pain, dizziness or a fall.

Send the note to us. We adjust the plan at the next visit.

How do we keep hospital trips short?

A stroke survivor can be exhausted by a car journey, a waiting room and a clinic corridor. Keep the doctor appointments you have been given, and let home physiotherapy carry the weekly work.

Ask the doctor which tests and reviews must be done in person. If it helps, we can send a short written note of progress for the doctor to read.

How can two homes share the work?

When a daughter lives in Bandar Meru Raya and a son stays in Klebang with the parent, the split can be simple. The person in Klebang repeats the exercises. The other keeps the paperwork, the bookings and the video calls.

  • One person owns the WhatsApp chat with us.
  • The second person is copied on every summary.
  • Both watch at least one session, in person or by video.

That way nobody carries the whole load. Our guide to caregiver participation covers what helps the person at home most.

What goals can we aim for?

Early goals are small and personal: reaching the toilet, holding a cup, standing at the sink. The local goals come later, such as walking from the car into a mall with a stick and one person beside him.

We set each goal with you and review it as progress changes. Your doctor’s advice comes first.

Questions people ask

My father tires after every hospital follow-up. Can physiotherapy be done at home instead?

Physiotherapy can be done at home, while hospital follow-ups with the doctor continue as booked. That keeps the number of journeys down. Ask his doctor whether any therapy at the hospital should carry on, and tell us.

It is very hot in the afternoon. When should he exercise?

Most families find the morning and early evening easier. We suggest short sessions with water nearby, and rest breaks. Stop if he feels dizzy, short of breath or unwell, and call his doctor.

I live in Bandar Meru Raya and my sister lives in Klebang with Dad. How do we avoid confusion?

Ask us to send one written summary after each visit to both of you. Agree which of you handles bookings and which repeats the exercises with him. That avoids two different versions of the plan.

His speech is affected. Can you help with that?

Speech and swallowing are treated by a speech therapist, and your doctor can refer you. We work on movement, balance and walking, and we tell you if we notice a swallowing problem so you can raise it with the doctor.

Every body is different. For a diagnosis that fits you, see a registered physiotherapist or doctor, and seek urgent care for sudden weakness, numbness, chest pain or severe pain after a fall.
