Baby motor milestones: what to expect

Your cousin's baby is already crawling and you are watching yours for the first roll.

When do babies sit, crawl and walk?

Healthy babies reach each skill across a wide window of months. The World Health Organization (WHO) studied 816 children from five countries and set the windows below, from the earliest 1 in 100 to the latest 1 in 100 [1].

SkillWindow in months [1]
Sitting without support3.8 to 9.2
Standing with help4.8 to 11.4
Hands-and-knees crawling5.2 to 13.5
Walking with help5.9 to 13.7
Standing alone6.9 to 16.9
Walking alone8.2 to 17.6

A baby near either end of a window can be perfectly healthy. The table shows how wide “normal” is, so it should relieve worry more than raise it.

My baby does not crawl. Is that a problem?

Not by itself. Some healthy babies never crawl on hands and knees. Some babies bottom-shuffle, roll across the room or pull to stand first.

What matters is the whole picture: a baby who moves in different ways, uses both sides and keeps learning.

What should I look for rather than a date?

Watch the quality of movement. Both sides should be used. Your baby should move the head freely in both directions, bring hands to the midline, and show interest in toys and faces.

See a doctor if your baby loses a skill, feels very stiff or very floppy, favours one side strongly, or is not responding to you. Our page on when your child’s movement needs a doctor lists more.

How can I help my baby move at home in Ipoh?

You do not need equipment. A mat on a tiled floor, you, and a few minutes at a time are enough.

  • Tummy time while awake, on a mat, with you at eye level.
  • Side lying and rolling play, with a toy placed just out of reach.
  • Sitting with support on a parent’s lap, then in a corner of cushions.
  • Hands and feet bare in the warm, humid weather, so the floor can be felt.
  • Floor time with a grandparent, who can sit with the baby while you cook.

Avoid propping a baby into positions they cannot reach alone. Read about baby walkers and development before buying one.

What about babies who were born early or had a hard start?

Born early, a baby is judged from the due date, not the birth date. A baby who spent time in a hospital nursery, such as the one at Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun, may need more time. Follow the paediatric team’s advice first.

A physiotherapist can watch movement after discharge and show you how to play and position your baby. See our paediatric physiotherapy page.

When is it worth asking a physiotherapist?

If your baby seems stiff or floppy, favours one side, has a flat or tilted head, or is behind in the window and you want a clear view, ask early. Our guide to head preference and torticollis explains one common reason.

Home visits let us see your baby in the place they play. Our Canning Garden centre is opening soon.

Questions people ask

My baby is not crawling. Is something wrong?

Not necessarily. Some healthy babies bottom-shuffle, roll or go straight to standing. What matters is that your baby moves with some variety and keeps gaining new skills. If you are worried, ask the klinik kesihatan or a paediatrician.

Does tummy time really matter?

Time on the tummy while awake builds the neck, shoulders and back for rolling and crawling. Start with a few minutes on a mat, with you at eye level, and build up as your baby tolerates it. Stop if your baby is upset or sleepy.

Should I compare my baby with my relatives' children?

It is natural, but cousins and siblings are poor yardsticks. Babies born early are judged from their due date, and healthy babies fall across a wide window. Use the health record book and ask your doctor if you worry.

Can a physiotherapist assess a baby?

Yes. A paediatric physiotherapist watches how your baby moves, plays and reacts, and suggests positions and play for you to try. If there is a medical worry, we will suggest you see the doctor too.

My baby prefers one side. Should I act?

A strong one-sided habit, such as always turning the head to one side or a flat patch on the head, is worth showing to a doctor or physiotherapist early. Simple play and positioning changes work best when started young.
