Check your physiotherapist is registered

You are about to let someone treat you or your parent, and you want to be sure.

How do I check a physiotherapist is registered in Malaysia?

Ask for their registration and practising certificate details, then confirm them with the Ministry of Health Allied Health Sciences Division or the Malaysian Allied Health Professions Council (MAHPC) [5]. It takes about ten minutes, and you can do it from KL or Singapore.

Do this before the first visit, not after. It is much easier to ask while you are still choosing.

What is the rule?

Physiotherapists in Malaysia are regulated under the Allied Health Professions Act 2016 (Act 774). They must register with MAHPC and hold a valid practising certificate before treating patients [1].

Our glossary pages on the Allied Health Professions Act and MAHPC registration explain the terms.

What titles are protected?

According to World Physiotherapy, “Physiotherapist” and “Pegawai Pemulihan Perubatan Fisioterapi” are the protected titles in Malaysia [2]. If someone calls themselves by another name, ask what their qualification is.

What is the four-step check?

  1. Ask the provider for the physiotherapist’s name, registration details and practising certificate.
  2. Write them down, or take a photo of the certificate.
  3. Confirm with the Ministry of Health Allied Health Sciences Division or MAHPC.
  4. Ask the same question again when a new physiotherapist is sent to you.

A good provider will be glad you asked. Keep the answer with the rest of your notes.

Why should I still ask in 2026?

Registration began in April 2022, and registered practitioners then need an annual practising certificate, with continuing professional development required for re-registration [3]. Enforcement has been phased in.

A June 2026 report says enforcement first set for June 2026 was postponed because private-sector compliance was low, with inspections to begin in January 2027 [4]. Until then, your own check is the quickest protection.

How is a physiotherapist different from a trainer or an exercise therapist?

A physiotherapist is trained in movement science, clinical assessment, pain management and diagnosing physical dysfunction. An April 2026 news report describes this as distinct from occupational therapists, fitness trainers and so-called exercise therapists [6].

This matters most for older adults, stroke survivors and people after surgery, where the wrong exercise advice can do harm. Our post on physiotherapy versus personal training goes further.

What can I do from KL or Singapore?

You can do the whole check by message. Ask the provider on WhatsApp, forward the answer to a sibling and keep it in the family group.

Our questions to ask any Ipoh physio page has the other five questions to send along. Home visits across Ipoh are available now, and our Canning Garden centre is opening soon.

Questions people ask

What is MAHPC?

The Malaysian Allied Health Professions Council, set up under the Allied Health Professions Act 2016 (Act 774). Physiotherapists register with it and hold an annual practising certificate. It is the body to confirm with if you want to check a person.

Is it rude to ask a physiotherapist for registration details?

No. A qualified physiotherapist expects the question and answers it easily. Ask by message before the first visit so there is no awkward moment at the door, especially if you are arranging care for a parent.

Can a gym trainer or massage therapist treat an injury?

They can help with fitness or relaxation, but they are a different job from a physiotherapist, who is trained in assessment, pain management and movement problems. If you have an injury, surgery or a stroke, see a physiotherapist.

What if the provider cannot show a registration number?

Do not book until they can, or choose someone else. You can also ask the Ministry of Health Allied Health Sciences Division. A good provider will not mind you waiting for the answer.

Every body is different. For a diagnosis that fits you, see a registered physiotherapist or doctor, and seek urgent care for sudden weakness, numbness, chest pain or severe pain after a fall.
