What is MAHPC registration?
MAHPC stands for the Malaysian Allied Health Professions Council. Under Act 774, physiotherapists in Malaysia must register with MAHPC and hold a valid practising certificate before treating patients, according to a news report [1].
World Physiotherapy states that MAHPC registration of physiotherapists began in April 2022, and that registered practitioners afterwards need an annual practising certificate, with continuing professional development required for re-registration [2].
Why does it matter for a patient or family?
Registration means a practitioner has been recorded with the council that regulates the profession. A practising certificate is the permission to practise for the year.
When someone comes to your parent’s home, you cannot see a clinic sign or a framed certificate. Asking for the registration details is the fair way to know who is treating them.
How can we check?
Ask the physiotherapist for their MAHPC registration and practising certificate details, and confirm them with the Ministry of Health Allied Health Sciences Division or MAHPC [3].
A public online register is not something we have been able to confirm, so check with the bodies above. Any provider, including us, can be asked the same question before the first visit.
An everyday example in Ipoh
A son in Kuala Lumpur reads a neighbour’s recommendation of a home physiotherapist in Ipoh. Before he books for his mother, he sends two questions by message: “What is your MAHPC registration?” and “Do you hold a current practising certificate?”
He keeps the reply with the quote so the family has a clear record.
