Loneliness can slow an older person's recovery

Your mother is healing physically, but the house is quiet and she has stopped wanting to try.

Can loneliness slow down recovery?

Yes. Recovery after a fall, a surgery or a stroke asks for effort every day, and effort is hard to find when nobody notices whether you tried. Loneliness does not damage a healing bone, but it lowers motivation, appetite and sleep.

From outside it looks like laziness: your mother says “what is the use” and leaves the exercises undone. She is not being difficult, only tired of doing it alone.

Why is this so common in Perak?

Perak had the highest share of residents aged 65 and over of any Malaysian state, reported as 10.8% in 2026 [1]. In Ipoh it is ordinary for grown-up children to work in KL, Penang, Singapore or further away.

So there are terrace houses and flats in Ipoh where an older couple, or one widowed parent, spends most of the day with the television on. A foreign domestic helper may be there, but may not share a language. The quiet is not neglect, just the way families now live.

What does it look like in a parent?

Families put it in plain words. She no longer wants to go to the kopitiam, he says later to the exercises, she has stopped calling her friends.

Other signs are eating less, staying in bed longer, less interest in the television programmes she liked and refusing visitors. Any one of these can have other causes, so mention them to her doctor if they last.

What are five small ways to bring people back?

  1. Fix a call time. A call at the same hour every day gives her something to wait for.
  2. Ask one neighbour, cousin or old friend to visit once a week, even for tea.
  3. Look for a group nearby. See community exercise groups in Ipoh and morning exercise in Ipoh parks.
  4. Ask the helper to walk with her to the corner shop each morning, when the weather allows.
  5. Put a visit on the calendar: a temple, church or mosque event, or a meal she likes.

How can a physiotherapy visit help?

A weekly or twice-weekly visit gives the week a shape. Someone arrives, notices how she walks, asks how she slept and sets a goal she can see, such as the stairs or the walk to the gate.

Family stays family, and low mood belongs with a doctor. What we do is help her move more safely, and suggest she sees a doctor if something seems wrong. Read how home physiotherapy in Ipoh works, and our page on older adult rehabilitation.

What if you live far away?

Share the load. Message us with her situation, the area in Ipoh and who is at home. We can send you the exercises after a visit so you can ask about them on your evening call.

Our guide to caring for your parents in Ipoh from KL sets out a five-step plan for arranging care from a distance. Home visits are available across Ipoh now, and our Canning Garden centre is opening soon.

When is it more than loneliness?

If she talks about being a burden, stops eating, or shows no interest in anything for more than two weeks, see her doctor. That is a medical matter, and a kind one to raise early.

Be gentle when you bring it up. Say “I have noticed you are quieter, and I would like us to ask the doctor” rather than “you are depressed”.

Questions people ask

How do I know if my parent is lonely or just tired?

Look at what changed. A lonely parent may stop answering calls, skip meals, avoid the morning walk and say there is no point in exercises. Tiredness usually lifts after rest. If the withdrawal lasts more than a couple of weeks, mention it to her doctor.

Can loneliness really affect physical recovery?

Yes, in practical ways. Someone with nobody to encourage her does fewer exercises, eats less well and sleeps worse, and these all slow recovery. Company does not replace treatment, but it makes it easier to keep going.

My parent has a helper at home. Is that enough?

A helper gives care and a presence, but she may not share a language or interests with your parent, and she has her own long days. Your parent still needs conversation with people who know her story, such as family, old friends and neighbours.

How can I help from KL or Singapore?

Set a fixed call time that she can look forward to, ask a neighbour or relative to visit weekly, and ask her about specific things, such as what she ate and who she saw. We can also send you the exercises after each visit so you can cheer her on.

When is low mood a reason to see a doctor?

See a doctor if sadness lasts more than two weeks, if she loses interest in everything, stops eating, talks of being a burden or of not wanting to live. Physiotherapy supports recovery, but mood problems need medical care.
