Stroke rehabilitation at home in Rapat Setia

Gait practice that begins in the hallway and moves to the park when the doctor agrees.

Why is the park a good goal after a stroke?

A park gives a longer, flatter and quieter path than most roads, and a reason to keep practising. It also gives the family a clear picture of progress: one more stretch, one more lap.

Our stroke rehabilitation at home page explains the method. Our guide to walking again after stroke covers the principles. Below is how to apply them in Rapat Setia.

What are the stages towards the park?

The stages follow the person. A typical order looks like this.

  1. Standing and weight-shifting at the kitchen counter.
  2. Walking in the hallway with a stick, frame or helper.
  3. The porch and the front step.
  4. The street outside, to a set point and back.
  5. The park entrance, then a short stretch.
  6. A longer stretch or a lap, with planned rests.

We reassess at each stage. Your doctor’s advice comes first, and we tell you when it is time to move on.

What does the helper do at each stage?

The helper makes the practice safe.

  • Stands slightly behind and beside the weak side.
  • Holds the person at the trunk or by a gait belt if shown how, never by the weak arm.
  • Watches the weak foot, the pace and the colour of the face.
  • Calls a stop at the first sign of dizziness, breathlessness or pain.

We teach these at the first visits and practise until the helper is confident. Our guide to caregiver participation explains how to help without taking over.

How do we plan around the heat?

Rapat Setia is hot and humid for much of the year. Walk in the early morning or early evening.

  • Bring water, and offer sips regularly.
  • Wear a hat and light clothes.
  • Plan a place to sit before you start.
  • Keep the first park walks short.

If the survivor feels dizzy or unwell, stop and sit. If it happens again, tell the doctor.

What can the family do between visits?

Practise the card’s exercises on the agreed days, and do short walks on the planned route. Write down how far the survivor walked and how he felt, and send it to us.

We use these notes to set the next stage. The family also keeps the survivor company, which matters for mood.

Questions people ask

My father drags one foot when he walks. Is the park a good place to practise?

Only after he walks steadily indoors and on the street, and his doctor agrees. We first work on the foot and leg at home. The park is a later step, with a helper at his weak side and a plan for rests.

How do we know he is not doing too much?

Signs of too much are dizziness, breathlessness, new pain, a rise in unsteadiness or unusual tiredness afterwards. Stop and rest. If it happens again, tell his doctor. Sudden new weakness, face droop or slurred speech needs the emergency department.

What aid should he use outdoors?

We assess him before advising. A stick may be enough for steady walkers, and a frame gives more support. Some people need a splint for the foot. We teach him to use whichever suits.

My mother is frightened to go outside after the stroke. How do we help?

Fear of falling is common and understandable. We start with short, supported steps, celebrate small gains and never rush the next stage. We also tell the family how to encourage her without pushing.

Every body is different. For a diagnosis that fits you, see a registered physiotherapist or doctor, and seek urgent care for sudden weakness, numbness, chest pain or severe pain after a fall.
