Back pain after lifting your parent

You helped Papa off the toilet and your back gave way, and now you cannot lift him.

Why does my back hurt after lifting my parent?

Because a person’s weight is far more than most backs are ready for, and a transfer is rarely a clean, planned lift. A twist at the toilet door or a sudden drop as the knees give way catches the back in a bad position.

If it happened to you, it does not mean you are weak. It means the job was too heavy for one person, and the method needs changing.

What should I do in the first three days?

Keep moving gently. Short walks around the house, changing position regularly and light tasks help more than lying in bed. A warm shower or a heat pack can ease the muscle spasm.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says painkillers should not be the first choice for low back pain, and that physical therapies, support and staying active can help [1]. If you need medicine, ask a pharmacist or doctor what suits you.

Which signs need urgent care?

Go to a doctor or the emergency department for numbness between the legs, loss of bladder or bowel control, or leg weakness that is getting worse. Also go for fever with back pain, or pain after a hard fall.

If none of these apply, most strains ease with movement over the next days to weeks. Our page on back pain: when to worry lists more detail.

How can I move my parent without injuring myself?

Use their own strength first, and raise the bed or chair to a height where they can push up. Then bring their feet under them, ask them to lean forward and push through the legs, and steady the hips. Do not lift from the arms or the belt alone.

Keep your feet apart, bend the knees rather than the back, and keep your parent close to your body, turning with your feet and not your spine. A walking frame or a transfer belt can help if a physiotherapist has shown you how. See lifting safely at home.

How do I share the load in an Ipoh household?

Say it plainly to siblings: I need two people for transfers, or a helper trained for it. Ask them to be there on weekends, or to pay for a short course for the helper. This keeps it practical, not a quarrel.

If you live in a terrace house with a steep staircase or a bathroom far from the bedroom, consider a commode or a downstairs bed. Our guides on helper training for patient care and caregiver strain and back care go further.

Can a physiotherapist help us both?

Yes. We can check your back, show you a safer transfer on your own bed and toilet, and plan exercises for your parent that reduce the lifting you do. Read how home physiotherapy in Ipoh works and our back pain page.

Home visits are available across Ipoh now, and our Canning Garden centre is opening soon.

Questions people ask

Should I rest in bed until my back is better?

No, not for long. Short rests are fine, but staying in bed makes the back stiffer. Walk around the house, change position regularly, and return to light daily tasks as pain allows. If you cannot manage, ask for help rather than pushing through.

Is it safe to keep lifting my parent while my back hurts?

It is better not to. A sore back is easily injured again. Use a helper, a transfer aid or a bed at the right height, and ask your parent's physiotherapist to show a safer method. Taking a few days off lifting protects both of you.

When is back pain after lifting serious?

Seek urgent care for new numbness between the legs, loss of bladder or bowel control, leg weakness that is getting worse, fever with back pain, or pain after a hard fall. Most strains settle with movement, but these signs are not for waiting.

Should I use a back belt?

A belt does not fix the cause of the strain. Better support comes from technique, strength and sharing the load. A physiotherapist can teach you how to brace and move.

Can my physiotherapist treat me and my parent at the same visit?

Tell us you are both in pain, and we can plan the visit to cover your parent's exercises and check your back and technique. Mention it on WhatsApp so we can plan time. A separate visit for your own back may suit better.
