Why does driving hurt my back?
Because your back is held still while the seat, the heat and the road keep working on it. A Grab driver in Ipoh may sit ten hours, stop-starting through Jalan Sultan Idris Shah and Jalan Raja Permaisuri Bainun. Lorry and school-bus drivers add vibration and long spells in one position.
The result is a tight lower back, sore buttocks and sometimes a leg that tingles by evening. That is a common pattern, and it is a signal to change something, not a sign you must quit the job.
What can I change in my seat in 10 minutes?
Start with the seat, because it costs nothing. Sit all the way back so your hips touch the backrest, then adjust from there.
- Raise the seat so your knees sit slightly below your hips.
- Move it close enough that your knees stay a little bent on the pedals.
- Tilt the backrest just past upright, not reclined like a sofa.
- Put a rolled towel in the curve of your lower back if there is a gap.
- Set the steering wheel so your shoulders are not hunched.
Take your wallet and phone out of your back pocket. Sitting on a wallet tilts the pelvis and twists the spine all day, and most drivers never notice it.
How do I break up long hours behind the wheel?
Stand up before the stiffness sets in. At every pick-up point or traffic-light queue, roll your shoulders and press your lower back gently into the seat.
When you park, walk for a minute, then lean back with your hands on your hips for five slow breaths. These small stops do more than one long stretch after the shift.
In Ipoh’s heat, drink water too. A tired, dehydrated body feels stiffer, and cramps in the calves and back are easier to trigger.
Are there habits that make driver back pain worse?
Yes. Lifting heavy boxes or a customer’s luggage straight after sitting for hours is a common trigger, because the back is cold and tight. Walk around first, then lift with bent knees and the load close to you, as in our guide to lifting safely at home.
Painkillers may take the edge off. The World Health Organization (WHO) says they should not be the first treatment for low back pain, and that staying active and physical therapies can help [1]. If you keep taking tablets just to finish the shift, it is time to have it looked at.
When should I see a doctor first?
Go to the emergency department for numbness around the groin, trouble passing urine or weakness in a leg. Go too for fever with the back pain, or pain after a fall. Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun, KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital and Pantai Hospital Ipoh all have emergency departments.
For ordinary aching that comes and goes with driving, a physiotherapist can look at how you sit, how you move and what is weak. Our page on back pain explains what we check, and sciatica covers leg pain from the back.
How can home physiotherapy fit a driver’s shifts?
Drivers rarely have a free weekday morning. A home visit can be arranged around your rest day or the hours between shifts, and you do not lose time travelling to a clinic.
We look at your posture, hips and trunk strength, then give you short exercises to do at home or beside your vehicle. Read how a visit works on our home physiotherapy page. For the long North-South Expressway runs, see long drive back pain and the highway.
