Why do my exercises keep slipping?
Life crowds them out. A shop shift, school drop-offs, minding grandchildren, a hot afternoon when you just want to lie down: the exercises are the easiest thing to drop.
This is a design problem, not a character flaw. A plan that does not fit your day will not survive it.
How do I make the plan smaller?
Ask your physiotherapist: “If I could only do two exercises, which two?” Then do those two first, every day.
Put a star next to them. The rest can be done on better days. A short plan that happens beats a long one that does not.
Which habit anchors suit Ipoh days?
Link each exercise to something you already do.
- After your morning kopi: calf raises while you wait for the kettle or hold the counter.
- While the rice cooks: a balance hold on one leg near the kitchen counter.
- During the evening news: seated exercises from the sofa.
- Before you brush your teeth at night: a short stretch.
- Between customers at the shop: shoulder rolls or standing hip stretches, if you work in a shop.
The rule is simple: new habit goes after an old habit, in the same spot.
What about hot afternoons and tired days?
Do the harder exercises in the cooler morning or evening. On a tired day, do the stars only and count that as a win.
A short walk at dusk on the Polo Ground or around your taman can replace a longer plan for one day. See exercise progression for how to pick up again without losing ground.
How can family and helpers help?
Ask them to ask, “Did you do your two?” rather than “Why haven’t you done your exercises?” A helper can sit with an older parent and count repetitions.
If you are the adult child living in KL, a phone message at the same time each day works. Our page on carrying grandchildren and joint pain shows how to fit exercises around childcare.
How does a home visit help?
We watch your real day, so we can find where five minutes fit. We can also tune the plan to your stairs, chairs and kitchen so that nothing needs special equipment.
Use the recovery goals worksheet to say what matters most. Home physiotherapy across Ipoh is available now, and our Canning Garden centre, near Fatimah Hospital, is opening soon.
