Does home physiotherapy work in a condo or flat?
Yes. A physiotherapist can work in any home with a few metres of clear floor, a firm chair and a safe bathroom. A condo or flat has its own questions: who lets the visitor in, can the lift take a walker, and is the bathroom big enough for the exercises.
Answer those before the first session and the visit goes smoothly. Our page on home physiotherapy in Ipoh explains how a visit runs from the first message.
How do I get past the guard post?
Tell the guard house and the management office who is coming and when. Give them the unit number, the date and time, and the visitor’s name once we confirm it. Some condos need a visitor pass, a registration form or a call from the unit.
Ask about visitor parking, too. A physiotherapist carrying a bag who has circled the car park twice loses time that should go to you. A one-line note to the management office a day ahead solves most of this.
What should I check about the lift and corridor?
Check the lift size, whether it works all day, and how far it is from the lift to your door. For a walker or wheelchair, measure the door width of the lift and of your front door.
After an operation or a stroke, a long corridor can be part of the exercise. Walking from the lift to the door and back is a useful daily goal. Tell us the distance and whether there are steps or a threshold.
What if the block has no lift?
Some low-rise flats have stairs only. Going up three or four floors after surgery or with a weak leg is a real challenge, and so is coming back down for an appointment.
Stairs can then become the main exercise, practised at the pace your surgeon or doctor allows and with someone beside you. Plan what you will carry, how frequently you will go out, and where you will rest on the landing. Read about stairs in Ipoh terrace houses after surgery for the same technique.
How do I set up a small apartment for exercise?
You need less space than you think. A clear strip as long as your sofa, a firm chair with arms, a wall to hold and a non-slip floor are enough for most exercises.
Move the coffee table, roll back the rug and keep a towel near. Tiles get slippery in a humid Ipoh afternoon, so wear shoes or grip socks indoors. See preparing your home for a physio visit for a full list.
What about the bathroom?
Apartment bathrooms are small, and the step into the shower or a wet floor can be a risk. Ask about a stool, a handheld shower and a mat. Our bathroom safety for elderly Malaysians guide goes through each one.
Photos of the bathroom and bedroom door help us plan before we arrive. Our Canning Garden centre is opening soon, and home visits across Ipoh are available now.
