New to Ipoh: finding rehab after surgery

You had surgery soon after arriving, and you do not yet know the doctors or streets.

What do I do first when I am new and just had surgery?

Get the papers. The discharge summary, the operation note and the surgeon’s written instructions are what any physiotherapist needs. If you do not have them, ask the ward or the surgeon’s clinic before you leave.

Ask three things: what you may and may not do, when the next review is, and who to call if something is wrong. Write the answers down, and keep a photo on your phone.

Who do I ask in Ipoh?

Ask the ward nurse or the hospital physiotherapist which follow-up they have booked. If you have a colleague, a landlord or a neighbour, ask for the name of a family doctor they trust. In Ipoh a personal recommendation goes a long way.

Our after hospital discharge checklist lists what to collect, and how to choose a physiotherapist in Ipoh explains how to compare options.

What if the surgery was done elsewhere?

Bring the operation note, scans and rehab protocol. If they are in another language, ask the hospital for an English or Malay summary. A physiotherapist in Ipoh can follow the surgeon’s limits while you keep in touch with the surgeon for review.

Do not skip the surgeon’s review because you have moved. Keep the date, and ask whether it can be done by video.

Why can home physio suit someone who is new?

You do not need to learn the city’s roads, parking or buses while you are recovering. A physiotherapist can visit, see your actual flat or house, and teach you the stairs, bathroom and bed in the place where you live now.

How do I check a provider and the language?

Physiotherapists in Malaysia must register with the Malaysian Allied Health Professions Council (MAHPC) and hold a valid practising certificate before treating patients [1]. Ask for these details and confirm them. See checking a physiotherapist is registered in Malaysia.

Ask also which language will be used in session. Clear instructions matter after surgery, and you deserve to understand each exercise.

What about insurance, and who looks after me day to day?

Ask your insurer or HR what is covered, whether a doctor’s referral is needed, and how claims are made. Keep receipts and reports. Our page on insurance and physiotherapy in Perak explains the questions to ask.

If you live alone, tell us. We can help you plan the first weeks: who brings food, who helps with the bathroom, and when to ask for help. Send us your situation on WhatsApp for a quote.

Questions people ask

I know nobody in Ipoh. Where do I start?

Start with the discharge papers and the surgeon's instructions, and ask the ward which follow-up and physio they arranged. Then pick a doctor for general care and a physiotherapist for the exercises. Send the papers to us and we will suggest how a first home visit could start.

My surgery was in another city or country. Can I still have rehab here?

Yes. Bring the operation note, discharge summary, scans and the surgeon's rehab protocol, translated into English or Malay if needed. A physiotherapist can follow those limits while you stay in touch with your surgeon.

Can I find a physiotherapist who speaks my language?

Ask when you enquire. People in Ipoh speak English, Malay, Mandarin and Chinese dialects such as Cantonese. Ask which language the physiotherapist can use in session, so you understand every exercise.

How do I know a physiotherapist is registered?

Ask for the practitioner's MAHPC registration and practising certificate details and confirm them with the Ministry of Health Allied Health Sciences Division or MAHPC. A good provider will be glad to share them.

Will my insurance or company medical card cover it?

It depends on the plan, the limit and sometimes a doctor's referral. Ask your insurer or HR before the first visit and keep receipts and reports. Check with your doctor or insurer about what claims need.
