Back pain before a wedding or big event

The big day is weeks away, your back is sore, and hours of standing lie ahead.

Why does the back hurt more before a big day?

You are busy and anxious, you are lifting and carrying, and you are sleeping badly. The muscles of the lower back tighten with stress, and a back that is already sore reacts to every extra job.

Add the plan for the day itself, and you can feel the dread. Take a breath. There is time to prepare, and small steps help.

What does the day itself ask of your back?

A wedding in Ipoh may mean sitting for hours on the dais and standing at the door to greet guests. It may also mean posing for photos, wearing heels or a heavy gown, and kneeling for the tea ceremony or for prayers.

Helpers carry hantaran, gift boxes, tables and decorations. A long dinner means sitting on a hard chair. Each is manageable alone, but together over a day they add up.

What is a good countdown plan?

Do not start anything new and hard. Keep walking every day, since it loosens the back, and add gentle hip and back mobility, as your physiotherapist advises.

In the final week, protect sleep, avoid heavy lifting, and rehearse the day’s long-standing or sitting periods for a short time. A trial run in the shoes and outfit exposes problems early. Our guide to lower back pain from sitting helps with the sitting parts.

How do I handle standing, sitting and kneeling on the day?

Standing: shift weight, use a low foot rest, and wear cushioned shoes. Sitting: a small cushion behind the lower back, feet flat, and a stand-up break between photo sets.

Kneeling for the tea ceremony: ask the family to place a cushion and a hand to help you rise, and do it once, slowly. Our page on posture and movement has more on keeping the back happy through long periods.

What should I carry on the day?

  • Flat shoes to change into.
  • A small cushion or rolled towel.
  • Water and a light snack.
  • A helper who knows when your breaks are due.
  • The phone number of whoever can step in if you need to sit out.

Ask someone to manage the heavy carrying so you are not lifting in a good outfit.

When should I see a physiotherapist?

If the pain is new, shoots down a leg, or is getting worse, see a doctor or physiotherapist before the day. A physiotherapist can look at your back, ease tight areas, and give a plan that fits the event.

Seek urgent care for numbness between the legs, loss of bladder or bowel control, or leg weakness. Our page on home physiotherapy in Ipoh explains how a visit works, and our back pain page covers causes. Our Canning Garden centre is opening soon.

Questions people ask

Should I start a hard workout to get my back ready?

No. A big new routine close to the date can cause a flare-up. Keep walking, add gentle strengthening and mobility, and build slowly. If the pain is recent or severe, get a check before you add anything.

How do I get through hours of standing at the door?

Change your stance every few minutes, put one foot on a low rest, and shift weight side to side. Wear flat or low, cushioned shoes with a change for the evening. Plan sit-down breaks with a chair placed nearby.

What about sitting on the dais for photos?

Sit with the hips back in the seat, a small cushion or rolled towel behind the lower back, and feet flat. Stand up and move between photo sets, even for a minute. Do not hold one posture for the whole sitting.

Is it safe to carry the gift boxes and decorations?

Share the load. Keep boxes close to your body, bend the knees, and ask two people to carry heavy items. Hold off on setting up if your back is flaring and give the job to someone else.

Should I take painkillers so I can get through the day?

Speak to a pharmacist or doctor about what is safe for you. Medicine can mask a problem that needs rest or a check. Do not stack painkillers to push through severe pain, and see a doctor for numbness or leg weakness.

Every body is different. For a diagnosis that fits you, see a registered physiotherapist or doctor, and seek urgent care for sudden weakness, numbness, chest pain or severe pain after a fall.
