Ergonomics, in plain words

It means fitting the work, the chair and the tools to the person, not the other way round.

What is ergonomics?

Ergonomics is the fit between a person and what they do. It asks whether the chair, desk, screen, counter height and tools suit the body using them.

The idea is simple: change the setup before the body pays the price.

Why does it matter for a patient or family?

Pain from work is rarely about one bad movement. It builds up from the same position, repeated for hours, day after day. A small mismatch, like a screen set too low, can ache the neck by Friday.

Good fit lowers the strain, but it does not replace movement. A perfect chair still needs regular breaks.

An everyday example in Ipoh

A hawker stall helper washes dishes at a sink that is too low and ends the shift with an aching back. A raised block under the basin, a rubber mat on the tiled floor and a rest for one foot cost very little.

By the end of the week, the back ache after work has eased, and her shifts feel less heavy.

Quick checks at a desk

  • Screen top at about eye level, an arm’s length away.
  • Feet flat on the floor or on a box, knees roughly level with the hips.
  • Elbows close to your sides, wrists in line with forearms.
  • A break every half hour or so to stand, walk or stretch.
  • Posture: how you hold your body through the day.

Questions people ask

Do I need to buy an expensive chair?

Not necessarily. A supportive chair helps, but a rolled towel behind the lower back, a stack of books under a laptop and a footrest can improve a desk setup. Breaking up long sitting is just as important as the chair.

How do I set up a laptop at home?

Raise the laptop so the top of the screen is near eye level and use a separate keyboard and mouse. If you cannot, place the laptop on a table where your forearms rest comfortably, and take more breaks.

Can a physiotherapist check my workstation?

Yes. Send photos of your desk or work area on WhatsApp, along with a short note about where it aches. We can suggest changes and, if needed, plan a home visit to look at the space and treat the problem.

If your ache starts at work or at the kitchen counter, send us a photo of your setup and tell us where it hurts; we will suggest changes and how a visit would run.
