Stroke recovery at home in Ipoh town

When home is upstairs in the old town, the first plan is how the survivor climbs.

What is stroke recovery at home like in the town centre?

It is shaped by the building. Older homes in Old Town and New Town can be narrow, with steep stairs and a bedroom on an upper floor, and a stroke makes every step a decision.

For the service itself, read stroke rehabilitation at home. For the neighbourhood, see the Ipoh Old Town and New Town area page.

Should the survivor live on one floor first?

If there is a room on the ground floor, it is worth considering for the first weeks. It cuts out the stairs while strength and balance return. Ask your doctor and the physiotherapist, because the right answer depends on the person.

If there is no ground-floor room, the plan is different. We focus on safe stair technique, rest points and a helper who knows where to stand.

How do we prepare the stairs?

Before discharge, go through the staircase with a critical eye.

  • Fit a firm rail on at least one side.
  • Remove anything stored on the steps.
  • Brighten the light, including the landing.
  • Mark the edge of each step in a contrasting colour.
  • Keep a chair at the top and bottom for resting.

Send photos if you are unsure. The physiotherapist advises on each point before the patient arrives.

How do we practise stairs after a stroke?

Stairs come back in stages. First we practise a single step, with a helper on the weak side. Then a few steps, then a flight, always with a rail and a rest.

The healthy leg leads going up and the weak leg leads going down, though the physiotherapist will tailor this to the person. Do not rush it. Stairs are where a fall costs the most.

Where can short walks begin?

New Town sits on a wide, flat grid, so the ground is easier than a sloping street. Start at the front door, then one block with a helper, then a rest on a chair or a shaded bench.

Choose cooler hours. Ipoh’s heat tires a recovering body quickly, and the weak side tires first.

Which hospital papers do I send?

Families in the town centre come home from Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun, KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital, Hospital Fatimah or Pantai Hospital Ipoh. Send the discharge summary, the medicine list and any exercise sheet from the ward.

For home care in general, see home physiotherapy in the Ipoh town centre.

Questions people ask

We live above a shop and the only bedroom is upstairs. Where should Dad sleep after the stroke?

Ask the ward team and your doctor, and tell the physiotherapist the layout. Some families move the bed to the ground floor for the first weeks if there is room. Stairs come back as a practised goal, with support, when the physiotherapist says he is ready.

How do we get a person with a weak leg up our narrow stairs on discharge day?

Tell the ward team and the transport crew about the staircase beforehand. Never pull on the weak arm or leg. Send us photos of the stairs so we can advise how to help, and who should stand where.

My mother has a stroke and lives alone near the old railway station. Can she go home?

That is a decision for her doctor and family together. Safe discharge depends on how she moves, who can be with her and whether the home can be adapted. We can advise on the home side once we know the layout.

When can he start walking outside on the New Town streets?

Once your doctor and the physiotherapist agree, begin with the front door and one flat block with a helper, and a chair to rest on. Go in the cooler part of the day. Add distance slowly and watch for tiredness.

Every body is different. For a diagnosis that fits you, see a registered physiotherapist or doctor, and seek urgent care for sudden weakness, numbness, chest pain or severe pain after a fall.
