Stroke rehabilitation at home in Tanjung Rambutan

Getting a parent moving again with the whole family around the house.

Why does a full household help stroke recovery?

Stroke recovery needs short, frequent practice, and a house with a few adults can supply it. The risk is that everyone helps in a different way, or does too much for the survivor.

Our stroke rehabilitation at home page explains the method. Here we cover how to organise a family around it.

What does the first visit include for the family?

We ask the family to be there for the first visit, or part of it. We first check how the survivor moves, then show the helpers.

  1. How to help the survivor sit up and stand without pulling on the weak arm.
  2. Where to stand when the survivor walks or goes up a step.
  3. Which two or three exercises to repeat each day.

We leave the main helper with a short card and a plan for the week, and the rest of the family can see it.

How do we share the daily practice?

Give each adult one job, so that the plan does not rest on one person.

  • One relative repeats the morning exercises.
  • One watches the afternoon walk.
  • One handles the evening routine and medicines.
  • One keeps the WhatsApp chat with us and the medical papers.

Change the rota when someone is away. Our guide to caregiver participation explains how to teach a helper without taking over.

How do prayer, the surau and meals fit into recovery?

Goals that matter to the survivor keep practice going. Most people want to sit for meals with the family and to pray again, and these are good aims.

We break them down: sitting on a firm chair at the table, standing from it and moving to the prayer area. Then we find the position that is safe for the body now. Your doctor and the survivor decide what is right, and we practise the movements that make it possible.

How do we set up a raised floor, steps and a back kitchen?

Check three places before the survivor comes home.

  • The front steps: is there a rail, and is the surface dry?
  • The path to the toilet: is it level, and is the floor non-slip?
  • The kitchen and back door: is there a step down?

If something is wrong, tell us what you see. We suggest simple fixes first, and we explain what to look for before you spend money on a rail or ramp.

What if the survivor wants to be near the river or outside?

Time outdoors helps mood, and survivors miss it. Start with sitting on the porch, then a few steps on level ground at a cooler time of day with someone beside the survivor.

If you know a level path nearby, tell us, and we can plan the distance in small steps.

Questions people ask

Relatives visit during the day. How do we avoid mixed advice?

Choose one person as the main contact and ask us to write the daily exercises on a card. Everyone who helps follows the card, so the survivor hears one set of instructions.

My father wants to pray again at the surau. What can we aim for?

We break it into steps: sitting steadily, standing from a chair, then the walk and the transfers needed at the entrance. The doctor and you decide which prayer position is safe. We practise the parts that make it possible.

Our home has a high front step. How do we manage it with a weak leg?

We teach the safe sequence for going up and down, and show the helper where to stand. A firm rail or a second low step may be added if needed. Until then the family should avoid carrying him.

How do we stop everyone helping too much?

Doing everything for the survivor slows recovery. We show relatives which tasks to leave to him, even when it takes longer, and which ones need a helper. A short chat with the family at the first visit sets the tone.

Every body is different. For a diagnosis that fits you, see a registered physiotherapist or doctor, and seek urgent care for sudden weakness, numbness, chest pain or severe pain after a fall.
