Starting exercise after a long break

It has been months or years since you exercised, and you do not know where to begin.

Why is it hard to restart?

After months away, your body is out of the habit and your mind remembers how fit you used to be. That gap makes people either give up after one hard session or avoid starting.

Starting is a skill. Small, repeatable sessions beat a heroic first day that leaves you in bed for three days.

Should I check with a doctor first?

If you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, diabetes, breathlessness, chest pain or dizziness, speak to your doctor before you begin. If you are well, you can usually start gently.

Stop and seek urgent care for chest pain, severe breathlessness or fainting. These are not signs to push through.

What does a gentle first four weeks look like?

Keep it simple. The aim is a habit, not a workout.

  1. Week one: a ten-minute walk, most days, at a pace where you can talk.
  2. Week two: walk fifteen minutes and add sit-to-stand from a chair, five times.
  3. Week three: walk twenty minutes and add wall push-ups and calf raises.
  4. Week four: repeat the strength moves twice a week and walk a little longer.

If a week feels hard, repeat it. Nobody is marking you. Our guide on exercise progression explains how to move up.

How do I handle Ipoh’s heat and rain?

Walk at dawn or after sunset, when the air is cooler. The Polo Ground and the park paths at D.R. Seenivasagam Park are flat and have space to turn back.

When afternoon rain keeps you in, walk the corridor of your home, march on the spot or do the chair exercises. Keeping active on rainy afternoons in Ipoh has more ideas.

What is normal, and what is not?

Normal is mild tiredness, warm muscles and soreness that peaks in two days and fades. Not normal is sharp pain, joint swelling, a knee that gives way, or pain that gets worse each day.

If something stays sore for more than a week, check with a physiotherapist. When long inactivity has left you weak, see deconditioning.

Can I start at home?

Yes. A chair, a wall and a pair of shoes are enough. Home physiotherapy across Ipoh is available now, and our Canning Garden centre, near Fatimah Hospital, is opening soon.

Questions people ask

Do I need to see a doctor before starting?

If you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, diabetes, chest pain, dizziness or you are over the age where you feel unsure, check with your doctor first. Otherwise start gently and build slowly. Your doctor's advice comes first.

How much should I do in the first week?

Less than you think you can. A short walk on most days is enough. Stop while you still feel you could do more, and see how you feel the next morning. Then add a little.

Why do I feel sore for days after exercise?

After a long break, muscles take time to get used to work. Soreness that peaks in two days and fades is normal. Sharp pain, swelling, or soreness that gets worse is not.

Can a physiotherapist help me start at home in Ipoh?

Yes. Tell us on WhatsApp how long since you exercised, any conditions and your area in Ipoh. We suggest how a home visit would build a safe starting plan. Our Canning Garden centre is opening soon. Home and centre prices differ.

Every body is different. For a diagnosis that fits you, see a registered physiotherapist or doctor, and seek urgent care for sudden weakness, numbness, chest pain or severe pain after a fall.
