From physio to everyday exercise

Your physiotherapy is winding down and you wonder what exercise comes next on your own.

Is there a clear moment when rehab ends?

There is rarely a clear moment. Rehab and exercise are two ends of one slope.

Early on, the goal is to heal and restore basics. Later, the goal is to build fitness and get back to what you enjoy.

The change from one to the other is gradual. The two can overlap for a few weeks.

What are the signs I am ready?

Look for these four.

  1. Daily tasks, like stairs and getting off the floor, feel easy.
  2. The injured side is close to the other side in strength and balance.
  3. Your exercises feel light for three sessions in a row.
  4. Your physiotherapist agrees you are ready.

If one is missing, it does not mean waiting for ever. It means the next step stays gentle.

How do I bridge the gap?

Mix rehab moves with a normal activity, and increase the normal part slowly.

  • Start with a short walk, such as a loop of the Polo Ground, then a longer one.
  • Add one gym, class or sport session a week, kept easy.
  • Do your key rehab moves as a warm-up before each session.
  • Raise one thing at a time: time, then weight, then speed.

Our guide on exercise progression explains how to raise the load. If you have been off for a long time, see exercise after a long break.

What should I ask at my last session?

Do not leave with only “you’re discharged”. Ask:

  • Which of my exercises should I keep, and how frequently?
  • What are my warning signs, and what should I do about them?
  • Which activities can I start now, and which should wait?
  • When should I come back for a check?

Write down the answers on your phone. Our page on reassessment and discharge explains the end of a plan.

What about gyms, sport and Ipoh’s weather?

For gym work, read return to gym. For sport, our sports rehabilitation approach adds sport-specific drills.

Exercise in the cool of early morning or evening, and use covered or indoor options on wet afternoons. The best plan is the one you keep.

Can I be supported at home?

Yes, a home visit can check your bridge plan on your own stairs and floor. Home physiotherapy across Ipoh is available now, and our exercise rehabilitation approach builds the link. Our Canning Garden centre, near Fatimah Hospital, is opening soon.

Questions people ask

When is rehab finished and exercise starts?

There is no hard line. You are ready when daily activities are comfortable, your strength and balance are close to the other side or to your usual level, and your physiotherapist agrees. The two can overlap for a few weeks.

Do I stop my rehab exercises when I start the gym?

Not at once. Keep the key ones as warm-ups or on off days for a while, since they protect the injured area. Your physiotherapist can tell you which to keep and which to retire.

What if my pain returns when I start exercising?

Go back one step, lower the dose and tell your physiotherapist. A return of mild ache that settles is not unusual. Sharp pain, swelling or giving way needs a check.

Can a physiotherapist help me plan this at home in Ipoh?

Yes. Tell us what you did in rehab, what you want to return to and your area in Ipoh on WhatsApp. We suggest how a home visit would plan the bridge. Our Canning Garden centre is opening soon. Home and centre prices differ.

Every body is different. For a diagnosis that fits you, see a registered physiotherapist or doctor, and seek urgent care for sudden weakness, numbness, chest pain or severe pain after a fall.
