Walking and hiking again after an injury

The trail at Bukit Kledang is still there, and you want to be on it again.

How do I start walking again?

Start on flat ground close to home and build up. Walk at a pace where you can talk, for a short time, and check how you feel the next morning.

If it is comfortable, add a little time every few days. You do not need to hurry back to your old distance.

What does a walking ladder look like?

Move up one rung when the one below is easy and pain-free the next day.

  1. Your street or taman, a short out-and-back walk in the cool of the morning.
  2. The Polo Ground, a flat loop with space and shade nearby.
  3. Gunung Lang Recreational Park, longer paths with gentle ups and downs around the lake.
  4. A gentle hill, short and with a rest stop.
  5. A longer trail, such as the lower paths at Bukit Kledang, with a friend.

Stay on a rung for a week or two if you need to. Slow is not failing, it is how the body adapts. Our page on hiking at Bukit Kledang with knee pain goes into the knee side.

What is different about Ipoh trails?

Afternoon rain makes soil, roots and limestone steps slippery, so choose a dry morning start. The heat and humidity also tire you earlier than a cool-climate hike would.

Take water, a hat and a phone, and plan to be down before the afternoon clouds build. If your ankle was the injury, read ankle care on Ipoh hill trails.

What footwear and pack should I use?

Wear shoes with a firm grip and a stable heel, not worn-out soles. A light pack keeps the load low, so carry only water, a snack and a first aid kit.

Trekking poles help some people on the way down. Ask your physiotherapist if they suit your injury.

When should I stop and turn back?

Turn back for sharp pain, a joint that gives way, new swelling, or tingling. Do not push on because you have already come far.

Dull tiredness that fades overnight is acceptable. See confidence after injury for coping with the worry that comes with the first hike.

Can I rebuild at home?

Yes. Step-ups on a low stair, calf raises and single-leg balance prepare you well. Home physiotherapy across Ipoh is available now, and our Canning Garden centre, near Fatimah Hospital, is opening soon.

Questions people ask

When can I walk on slopes after an injury?

Wait until flat walking feels easy for a good stretch with no pain the next day. Slopes load the knees and ankles in new ways. Your physiotherapist can tell you when to try them and what to watch for.

Is walking downhill harder than uphill?

Yes, for the knees. Coming down asks the thigh muscles to hold you back, which tires them and loads the joint. Take smaller steps, use trekking poles if they suit you, and keep the first downhill short.

Should I hike alone on my first trip back?

It is better with a friend, and tell someone your route and time. Stay on popular paths where you can turn back easily. A friend also lets you stop without feeling you are holding people up.

Can a physiotherapist visit me at home in Ipoh?

Yes. Send us your injury, how far you used to walk and your area on WhatsApp, and we suggest how a first visit would go. Our Canning Garden centre is opening soon. Home and centre prices differ.

Every body is different. For a diagnosis that fits you, see a registered physiotherapist or doctor, and seek urgent care for sudden weakness, numbness, chest pain or severe pain after a fall.
