What does recovery from a fracture involve?
A broken bone heals in stages, and your doctor decides how it is protected: a cast, a splint, a sling, or surgery with plates, screws or rods. Recovery means getting back the movement, strength and confidence that were lost while the bone mended.
This page covers fractures in general. If yours is in the hip, wrist or ankle, our pages on hip fracture, wrist fracture and ankle fracture go into the details.
Why does a healed bone still feel stiff and weak?
Because bone is only one part of the limb. While it healed, the muscles shrank, the joints stiffened and the swelling pooled. Some people also protect the limb so much that they forget how to use it.
Physiotherapy rebuilds the rest. We work on the joints that stiffened, the muscles that weakened and the swelling that lingers, then link them back into everyday tasks. Our guide on ankle stiffness after a cast shows how this looks in one common case.
What will the physiotherapist do?
We read your doctor’s instructions first. They tell us what is safe, including how much weight the limb may carry (see weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing). Then we plan around them.
- Keep the free joints moving and the other limbs strong.
- Reduce swelling with positioning and gentle movement.
- Teach safe walking, with crutches or a frame, and safe transfers.
- Restore the joint’s range of movement after the cast or splint comes off.
- Build strength in steps, then balance and control.
- Prepare you for work, driving and your usual activities.
What happens at home in Ipoh?
Recovery is hardest at home, where the stairs, the wet bathroom floor and the narrow terrace-house doorway are. Seeing them lets us practise exactly what you need.
Getting hurt can also mean changes to the commute for people who ride or drive to work. Whether you ride a motorbike or drive, we plan when to try it with your doctor’s agreement. Our guide on recovering after a fall at home covers the first days.
Can I get help through PERKESO?
If you are insured by the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) and the injury is work or commute related, ask PERKESO about its rehabilitation services. The Sultan Nazrin Shah PERKESO Rehabilitation Centre in Ipoh offers structured physiotherapy, according to a June 2026 report [1]. The report does not say who is eligible, so confirm with PERKESO directly.
Our guide on PERKESO physiotherapy in Ipoh explains how families can think about the options. We can also support you at home if that route does not suit you or between stages.
What can I do this week?
Follow your doctor’s instructions first. Then add small steps.
- Move the joints you are allowed to move, a few times each day.
- Raise the limb to ease swelling, as your doctor advises.
- Use your walking aid correctly, and keep it within reach.
- Clear loose rugs, and dry the bathroom floor before use.
- Write down what you want to do again.
For older adults, falls are the main risk. Cochrane reviewers found exercise cut the rate of falls in community-dwelling older people by 23% [2]. We build balance and leg strength into your plan.
When should you see a doctor?
Contact your doctor or the treating hospital if the limb becomes more painful, numb, cold, pale or blue. Do the same if the cast feels too tight, the wound leaks, or you have a fever. Go to the emergency department for chest pain or breathlessness, or a swollen, painful calf.
These need a doctor first. Tell us afterwards so we can adjust the plan.
