Why do ankles and knees get hurt in futsal?
Futsal is small-court, fast and played on a hard floor. You stop, turn and push off again and again, so the ankle and knee take quick twisting forces.
Most injuries happen in the last few minutes of a match, when legs are tired and the step before a tackle is a little late. A friendly game with colleagues on a weekday night after a full work day adds to that tiredness.
What should I do in the first few days?
Stop playing and let the swelling settle. Walk as normally as you can, because gentle movement helps more than lying still. Our guide on rest or move after injury explains the balance.
Get checked by a doctor if you cannot put weight on the leg, the knee locks or gives way, or the joint looks out of shape. Those need a proper look before any exercise.
What does a physiotherapist check?
We look at how the joint moves, how strong the muscles around it are, and how you balance on one leg. We also ask how you play: goalkeeper, pivot or winger, and which foot lands first.
For an ankle, see ankle sprain. For a twisting knee, see anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and meniscus tear, which a doctor may need to confirm first.
How do I return to the court step by step?
Return in order, not in one go. Move to the next step only when the last one is pain-free the next morning.
- Walk briskly on flat ground, for example around the Polo Ground.
- Do single-leg balance and calf raises.
- Jog in a straight line, then in a figure of eight.
- Practise sudden stops, side steps and landings from a small jump.
- Join team drills without contact, then a short spell in a match.
If a step brings back pain or swelling, go back one step and tell your physiotherapist. This is normal, not a failure.
What about my league and my team?
Tell the captain you will join in short spells.
Weekday-night leagues pull you back quickly, and a player who rushes back can lose more weeks later.
Families can help too. If a parent or spouse sees you limping to the car after a match, ask them to remind you of your plan.

Can rehab happen at home?
Early rehab is mostly balance, strength and landing control, which we can do in your living room or porch. Home physiotherapy across Ipoh is available now, and our sports rehabilitation approach covers the later steps. Our Canning Garden centre, near Fatimah Hospital, is opening soon.
