Moving back to Ipoh for your parents

You are leaving the city job and the flat behind, and the first month will decide a lot.

Is moving back the right decision?

You are asking a hard question, and the honest answer is that families choose differently. For some, a parent’s fall or stroke makes the decision for them. For others, a slow decline makes it a long conversation.

Perak had the highest share of residents aged 65 and over of any Malaysian state, at 10.8% in 2026 [1]. Ipoh adult children face this same choice. Whatever you decide, you are doing it out of love.

What should I do in the first week?

Listen and look. Sit with your parents at the kopitiam or the dining table and ask how the days go. Watch how they climb the stairs, use the bathroom and cook.

Do not rearrange the house on day one. Take photos of the stairs, bathroom and bed, and write down what worries you. These notes help a doctor or physiotherapist later.

What records and contacts do I gather?

Collect the medicine list, the latest hospital letters and scans, the doctor’s name, and appointment dates at places such as Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun or a private hospital. Ask your parent’s permission before you open papers.

Our parent question checklist and family care planner give you a way to organise this in an evening.

How do I build a local team?

You have been away, so rebuild. A family doctor, the follow-up clinic, a physiotherapist, a helper if needed, and one neighbour who will phone you if something seems wrong.

A home physiotherapist can assess how your parent moves in the house and tell you what is safe to leave alone and what needs fixing. See our page on home physiotherapy in Ipoh for how that visit goes.

How do I make the house safer without a big renovation?

Start with the bathroom, stairs and bedroom. A non-slip mat, a shower stool, a rail, a night light and a clear path cost little and prevent falls. Our home safety checklist walks you through it.

Do not buy equipment before a physiotherapist has seen your parent. A frame that is the wrong height can make things worse.

How do I protect myself?

Lifting, broken sleep and worry hurt the carer too. Share tasks with siblings, take a regular day off, and ask for a helper trained in transfers. Read about caregiver strain and back care.

If your back or shoulder begins to hurt, tell us. Home visits are available across Ipoh now, and our Canning Garden centre is opening soon.

Questions people ask

Should I move back or arrange care from where I live?

There is no single right answer. Moving back gives presence but can cost income, relationships and rest. Some families choose a mix of a helper, visits and distance planning. Try a trial stay of a few weeks before deciding.

What should I do first when I get home?

Listen and observe before changing things. Spend the first days seeing how your parent really manages mornings, meals, the bathroom and the stairs. Collect medicines, hospital letters and appointment dates. Then decide what needs fixing first.

How do I find a physiotherapist after being away for years?

Ask your parent's doctor, check what is offered at the hospital follow-up, and look at providers' public pages. Ask about home visits, registration and what a first visit involves. We can arrange a home assessment once you describe the situation.

How do I stop being the only carer?

Say the load out loud to siblings, ask each to own a task, such as money, a weekly visit or transport, and agree on a helper. Fix a day off for yourself. A carer who burns out helps nobody.

My parents resist my moving back. What now?

They may fear being a burden or losing independence. Reassure them that you are there to support, not take over. Let them keep control of decisions they can make, and introduce changes one at a time.
