When is it safe to start cycling again?
Start when your doctor or surgeon agrees and daily walking is comfortable. Cycling is a good early exercise because the bike carries your weight and the movement is smooth.
Safe does not mean pain-free in every minute. A mild ache that settles within a day is acceptable, while sharp pain, swelling or a feeling of giving way means stop and ask.
What are the stages of a return?
Move through the stages in order, and stay on each until the next morning feels normal.
- Indoor, easy effort. Ten to fifteen minutes on a stationary bike, light gear, to check the joint.
- Indoor, longer. Add time, then add a little resistance.
- Outdoor, flat and short. One quiet loop, then a second.
- Outdoor, with gentle hills. Only after flat rides feel easy.
If a stage brings back pain, drop back one step. That is how rehabilitation works, not a sign you have failed. The ideas are explained in exercise progression.
Where should my first outdoor ride be?
Choose a flat, quiet place where you can stop easily. In Ipoh, the paved paths around the Polo Ground or D.R. Seenivasagam Park suit a first ride, far from the traffic of the main roads.
Go early, before the heat builds, and carry water because humid weather tires you faster than you expect. Save the climbs towards Tambun and Gopeng for later.
What if I am afraid of falling again?
Some riders are more afraid than their body needs them to be. That fear is understandable if you fell or were knocked off, and it deserves attention, not a push.
Practise braking and balance at walking pace on an empty car park first. Ride with a friend, wear a helmet, and tell them your stop signal. Read more in confidence after injury.
How will I know I am ready for more?
You are ready to add distance when you finish a ride with no pain, and the joint feels normal the next morning. Add a little time rather than a lot of speed.
If you ride for health, your physiotherapist can also set targets for strength, such as stairs and single-leg work, so the bike does not have to do all the work. See cycling knee and back pain if the pain returns on the road.
Can I prepare at home?
Yes, and it is a good use of the waiting weeks. Home physiotherapy across Ipoh is available now, and our sports rehabilitation plan includes a return-to-ride schedule. Our Canning Garden centre, near Fatimah Hospital, is opening soon.
